In this episode, Pamela talks to Marion Fields about the ministry of presence. She explains:
-Her Journey of Calling: How did God first call you into this ministry of presence, and what has kept you faithful through the years?
Living a Lifelong Love of Scripture
-How has Scripture shaped your walk with Jesus and the way you encourage others?
Ministry in Moments of Crisis
-During the COVID lockdown, you began recording “Thought for the Day” to support your church during a frightening and isolating time. What did that season teach you about spiritual care and the power of simple encouragement?
Encouraging Believers in Their Daily Walk
-What do you think Christians today most need to hear, and how can we strengthen one another in practical ways?
Following Jesus in the Ordinary
-You often speak about introducing people to “the most exciting kind of life—following Jesus.” What does that look like in everyday routines, and how can listeners cultivate a deeper awareness of His presence?
Walking With Others in Faith
Sometimes God introduces us to people in the most unexpected ways.
I first came across Marion Fields on YouTube, where she shares her Thought for the Day. There was something simple and genuine about the way Marion spoke about faith, Scripture, and God’s presence. When I reached out to her and invited her to join me on the podcast, I was delighted when she agreed.
Our conversation became a beautiful reflection on something that all of us are called to in one way or another: walking with others in faith.
Marion has served as both a hospital chaplain and a hospice chaplain—a ministry she believes God called and equipped her to do. Her years accompanying people through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives have taught her that ministry isn’t always about having the perfect words. Sometimes, it is simply about being there.
That is the ministry of presence.
Walking With Others
When someone is going through illness, grief, uncertainty, or a difficult season, we may feel that we don’t know what to say. We may even worry that we aren’t equipped to help.
Marion reminds us that walking with someone doesn’t necessarily mean having all the answers. It can mean listening. It can mean praying with someone. It can mean sharing a little of our own testimony and reminding another person of what God has done in our lives.
Our stories matter.
When we share our experiences of God’s faithfulness—not to make the conversation about ourselves, but to encourage another person—we can help someone see that God is still present in their own story.
Becoming Aware of God’s Presence
One of the beautiful themes Marion speaks about is the importance of reminding ourselves every day that God is present.
It is easy to become distracted by everything happening around us. We can move through our day thinking about our responsibilities, our problems, our plans, and our worries without stopping to recognize that God is with us.
Marion encourages us to cultivate that awareness.
God is present in the ordinary moments. He is present when we sit with someone who is hurting. He is present when we listen. He is present when we pray. He is present when we don’t know what to say.
Sometimes, before we can help someone else recognize God’s presence, we need to remind ourselves of it.
If God Calls You, He Will Equip You
Another message that stood out to me from Marion’s story is this: don’t be afraid if God calls you to something.
We can easily look at a ministry or a particular need and think, I’m not qualified. I don’t know enough. What could I possibly offer?
But Marion’s own journey reminds us that when God calls us, He also equips us.
That doesn’t mean we will never feel inadequate. It doesn’t mean we will have every answer. It means that our willingness to say yes can become the beginning of something God wants to do through us.
Perhaps the call is to become a chaplain. Perhaps it is to visit someone who is sick. Perhaps it is to sit with a grieving friend. Perhaps it is to encourage someone who has lost hope.
Our ministries may look very different, but the invitation is the same: be willing to walk with another person.
The Message People Need to Hear
After all her years of ministry, Marion says that there is something people need to hear:
God loves them.
It sounds simple, but sometimes the simplest truths are the ones we most need to hear.
There are people who are lonely. People who are afraid. People who are grieving. People who wonder whether God has forgotten them. People who may never walk into a church but may encounter God’s love through another person who is willing to sit beside them, listen to them, and remind them that they are loved.
Perhaps this is one of the most important parts of our Christian witness.
We don’t always need to preach a sermon.
Sometimes we simply need to show up.
Sometimes we need to listen.
Sometimes we need to share our testimony.
Sometimes we need to pray.
And sometimes we need to say the words that someone desperately needs to hear:
God loves you.
Marion’s ministry is a beautiful reminder that God’s work doesn’t always happen through grand gestures. Often, it happens quietly—in a hospital room, beside a hospice bed, in a conversation, through a prayer, or simply through the faithful presence of another person.
I hope this episode encourages you to become more aware of God’s presence in your own life—and to consider where God may be calling you to walk alongside someone else.
And if God is calling you, don’t be afraid.
He will equip you.

Who might God be asking me to walk with today?
